Resident Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY

Provides routine daily nursing care and services that support the care delivered to residents requiring long-term or rehabilitative care, in accordance with the established nursing care procedures and as directed by the supervisor. An active approach to Resident care will be taken and not just passive maintenance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position.  This list is not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Assists the resident in any daily routines, any personal care, and housekeeping tasks that the resident needs assistance in performing.
  • Reports observations and other pertinent information related to the care of the resident.
  • Provides services that support the care delivered to the resident, and review care plans daily to determine if changes in the daily care routine have been made.
  • Provides input in the formulation and evaluation of standards of care.
  • Participates in the identification of team member educational needs.
  • Conducts self in a professional manner in compliance with unit facility policies.
  • Surveys for safety and picks up resident’s room each day.  Removes all soiled linens from rooms.  Bed linens, towels, and wash cloths are to be changed once a week or as necessary.
  • Performs checks on residents and provides assistance to toilets or cleanup of soiled resident.
  • Ensures that all residents call lights are promptly answered, followed by appropriate responses to requests.
  • Assists with dietary responsibilities, including serving meals and cleaning meal area, as needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all pertinent resident care information.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or the Executive Director.
  • Understand and follow compliance with safety and infection control policies and procedures to include the practice of regular and thorough hand-washing. Adherence to established procedures in the use and disposal of personal protective equipment.  
  • Ensures confidentiality of all residents. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Educational Requirements and Experience:
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent required.
  • One (1) year Nursing Assistant experience or student nurse preferred.
  • Experience working with the elderly is desirable.
Certifications, Licenses and other Special Requirements:
  • Must be certified in C.P.R., first aid training, and documentation of Personal Hygiene training with nurse instructor.
  • Completion of certification program for Nursing Assistants, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Language Ability:

  • Possess the ability to deal tactfully with team members, residents, and family members, visitors, government agencies, and the general public.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management, team members, and outside contacts.
  • Must possess acceptable written and verbal communication skills utilizing the English language.

Cognitive Demands:

  • Possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action. 
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must be caring and compassionate in dealing with the residents as well as team members.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and, at times, hostile people within the community.
  • Possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing practices.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, bend, talk, and hear.  The employee is frequently required to walk and sit.  The employee is occasionally required to climb stairs.  The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to touch, handle, and feel, and required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee must be able to lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  Must be able to lift and transfer residents, using proper body mechanics as needed.

Works in well-lit/ventilated areas.   May be exposed to small resident pets. Subject to falls, burns from equipment, infectious diseases, substances, odors, etc. throughout the work day.  Subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents/patients, family members, personnel, visitors, etc.
