미국 전역에서 가장 피해를 주는 해충을 꼽으라고 하면 단연 집을 갉아먹는 흰개미 터마이트를 들 수 있습니다.

우리가 한국에서는 전혀 경험하지 못한 터마이트는 미국의 1년간 토네이도 피해보다도 크며 최근 지구의 온난화 글로벌 워밍으로 인해 알라스카만 을 빼고 급속도로 확산되고 있는 실정입니다.

터마이트에 대한 집의 공격은 계절 을 가리지 않고 계속되고 지은지 오래된 집일수록 피해의 정도가 큽니다. 특히 3년 이상 된 집들 중에서 3분의 1이상은 터마이트 피해가 진행되고 있다고 보고하고 있습니다.

그렇지만 새집이라도 절대 안심 할 수는 없습니다.

집 밑으로 많은 공사자재들 나무조각 건축재료가 방치되어 있는 것을 볼 수 있기 때문입니다. 이러한 문제로 요즘의 빌더들은 새집을 분양할 때 베이스테이션 플라스틱으로 된 털마이트 프로텍션 시스템을 집 주변에 심어주기도 합니다. 왜냐하면 터마이트는 나무와 습기만 있으면 일단 자기 먹이로 간주하고 무리를 지어서 갉아먹기 시작하기 때문입니다.

If asked about the most damaging pest in the U.S., the termite, which eats away at homes, is undoubtedly the top concern.

In Korea, we may not have experienced termites, but in the U.S., the damage from termites exceeds even the annual tornado damages. Due to recent global warming, termites are rapidly spreading everywhere except Alaska.

Termites attack homes year-round, and older houses tend to suffer more significant damages. Specifically, more than one-third of homes over 3 years old are reported to be under termite attack.

However, even if it's a new home, it's never completely safe.

This is because one can often see many construction materials, wooden pieces, and building materials left under the house. Hence, modern builders often install termite protection systems, made of base station plastics, around the house. This is because termites consider any wood and moisture as their food and start consuming them in groups.

Houses attacked by termites, unfortunately, aren't approved for loans by banks.

If a pest control company issues a termite letter (a required document for home sales) indicating the presence of termites, banks exclude that home from value evaluations, and thus, won't provide loans.

So, if you suspect termite damage, it's crucial to contact a professional termite company as soon as possible. They will drill the damaged parts and inject chemicals to destroy the termite mound.

Usually, large-scale treatments require more than 150 gallons of chemicals, but nowadays, many prefer termite base stations over harsh chemicals. Even brick houses can't be considered safe from termites. And stucco houses are no exception either.

To prevent termites, try not to lay wood dust or wood bark around the house. Certainly, don't place firewood near the house.

Houses with basements or crawl spaces have a high chance of termite infestation. It's essential to keep these areas dry. Nowadays, most prefer baiting treatments over chemical treatments.

I also use baiting treatments extensively in the field. I plant them around the house walls, within 20 feet, and manage them every three months.
