많은 사람들이 1) AP 시험 점수가 미국 대학 입학에서 훨씬 더 중요해졌다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 대학 측에서 원하든 원치 않든, 수년간 SAT와 ACT 점수가 선택 사항이 되어 왔습니다. 그러나 2) 많은 학부모와 학생들은 여전히 지원 에세이를 평범한 단편 소설로 오해하고 있습니다. 물론 대학 지원 에세이는 감정적으로 감동적이고, 희망적이며, 개성을 부각해야 하지만, 3) 대학 지원 에세이는 "판매 전략"이기도 합니다. 자신이 어떻게, 왜 다른지 보여줘야 하며, 대학 입학 사정관들 중 "최고 입찰자"에게 자신을 판매하려고 하는 것입니다. 따라서 4) 자신을 어떻게 표현하는지, 즉 "포장"이 중요합니다.

많은 학생들이 입학 장벽을 극복하는 데 도움이 될 수 있는 색다른 전공에 지원하여 "시스템을 속이려" 하지만, 이는 괜찮습니다. 하지만 지원 에세이는 전공에 대한 자신의 헌신이나 관심을 드러냅니다. 전공에 진정으로 관심 있는 학생들에게는 항상 뒤떨어질 것입니다. 중요하고 흥미로운 세부 사항이 담긴 에세이를 통해 전공 분야에 대한 지식과 흥미를 과시하세요. 제가 BTS 아미나 블랙핑크 블링크였다면 멤버들의 이름, 생일, 최신 소셜 미디어 게시물 등을 알고 있었을 겁니다. 그렇지 않으면 그냥 사기꾼처럼 보일 겁니다. 예를 들어 컬럼비아 대학교 고전학 전공에 진심으로 관심이 있었다면 고등학교에서 라틴어나 그리스어를 공부했을 것이고, 라틴어 및 그리스어 경연 대회에도 몇 번 참가했을 것이며, 고전 동아리 회원이었을 수도 있습니다. 5) 대학 지원 에세이는 Common Application 에세이 주제인 "시간 가는 줄 모를 정도로 매력적이라고 생각하는 주제, 아이디어 또는 개념을 설명하십시오."에 설득력 있게 답해야 합니다. 이 에세이 주제는 단편 소설도 아니고, 감정적으로 가슴 뭉클한 내용도 아니며, 지원자의 성격을 언급할 필요도 없다는 점에 유의하세요. 6) 전형적인 것이 항상 좋은 것은 아닙니다. 전형적인 단편 소설은 부적절할 수 있습니다. 입학 사정관들은 수천 개의 에세이를 읽으며, 어떻게 당신이 헤라클레스의 역경을 극복하고 성숙하고 강인한 젊은 여성이 되었는지에 대한, 똑같이 가슴 아프고 슬픈 이야기를 백 번째까지 읽고 나면 지쳐버릴 지경입니다.

컬럼비아에 지원하는 한 학생은 같은 공통 지원서(Common Application) 에세이 주제로 에세이를 작성하며 볼테르가 신성 로마 제국을 묘사한 것이 신성하지도, 로마도, 제국도 아니라고 주장하며, 역사적으로 정확한 근거를 제시했습니다. 그리고는 다시 역사학자들이 왜 여전히 신성 로마 제국이라는 용어를 사용하는지, 그리고 그 이유를 합리적이고 논리적이며, 아주 자세하게, 아주 자세하게 설명했습니다. 라틴어와 로마 역사에 진심으로 열정을 가진 학생의 모습을 생생하게 보여주는 훌륭한 사례였습니다.

또 다른 학생은 코넬에 지원 에세이를 작성했는데, 학업적으로 훨씬 성공했지만 정작 명문대에 진학한 형에 대한 이야기였습니다. 그는 형과의 갈등을 드러내고, 형이 얼마나 재능이 있고 형을 걱정하는지 보여주며, 형의 조언과 과외 지도를 받아들였습니다. 그 에세이는 대학 지원 에세이에 대한 모든 상식과 일반적인 의견을 뒤집어엎고, 그의 형에 대해 더 많이 이야기했습니다. 저는 그 에세이가 훌륭한 이야기라고 말했고 (글도 아주 잘 썼죠), 그가 에세이를 보여준 다른 비평가들에게도 옹호했습니다. 형에 대해 그렇게 쓴 것은 당신의 성격과 형의 성격, 그리고 강점을 정확히 알고 있다는 것을 보여준다고 말입니다. 하지만 당신은 형을 받아들이고, 그의 조언을 성숙하게 받아들이고, 형이 참을 수 없을 만큼 (그리고 성공한) 잘난 체하는 형 증후군을 용서했습니다. 당신은 형보다 더 큰 형이었고, 더 큰 사람이었다고 저는 말했습니다. 그런데 그 둘은 둘 다 합격했습니다. 한 명은 컬럼비아에, 다른 한 명은 코넬에 합격했죠. 제 요점은 대학 에세이가 어떻게 작성되어야 하는지에 대한 만능 답은 없다는 것입니다. 브레인스토밍을 하고, 탐구하고, 모든 사람이 가지고 있는 좋은 이야기를 파헤쳐야 합니다. 그리고, 네, 누구에게나 훌륭한 이야기가 있습니다. 당신은 당신의 이야기를 해야 합니다.

Many know 1) AP test scores have become much more significant in US university admissions with years of SAT and ACT scores having been optional, whe ther universities themselves like it or not. However, 2) many parents and students are still mistaking the application essay for a normal short story. Sure, the college application essay should be emotionally poignant, uplifting, highlighting character, but 3) college application essays are also a "sales pitch." You need to show how and why you're different, and you're trying to sell yourself to the "highest bidder" among university admissions officers. As such, 4) "packaging" is important--how you represent yourself.

Many students try to "game the system" by applying to exotic majors that may help them over the admissions hurdle, which is fine, but their application essays betray their commitment or interest in the major. They will always lose out to students genuinely interested in the major. Make sure that the essay, with significant and interesting details, shows off your knowledge of and fun interest in the major. If I were a BTS Army or a Black Pink Blink, I would know the member names, their birthdays, have seen their latest social media posts et cetera. Otherwise, I just look like an imposter. If you were really interested in becoming a classics major at Columbia University, for example, you would have studied Latin and/or Greek in high school, been to a few Latin and Greek competitions, maybe had been a member of a classics club, and 5) your college application essay would answer convincingly the Common Application essay topic "Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time." Notice that it's not a short story, it's not emotionally poignant, nor requires any mention of the applicant's character, with this particular essay topic. 6) Typical is not always best; typical short stories may be inappropriate. Admissions officers read thousands of essays and they're bored out of their minds after reading the one hundredth similarly poignant, sad story about how you became a mature, strong, young woman overcoming herculean odds.

One student applying to Columbia, writing on that same Common Application essay topic, wrote about how Voltaire's description of the Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, nor Roman, nor empire, and gave historically accurate detailed reasons for Voltaire's opinion, and then he turned around and said and showed why historians though still use the term, Holy Roman Empire, and gave perfectly reasonable, logical, and detailed--detailed!-- reasons why they do so. It was a tremendous picture of a sincerely enthusiastic student interested in the Latin language and Roman history.

Another student wrote an application essay to Cornell talking about his much more academically successful older brother, who himself got into a hot shot university. He showed tension between he and his brother, showed how his brother was indeed talented and concerned for him, and then took in his older brother's advice and his tutoring help. The essay turned-on-its-head all common sense and usual opinion about what a college application essay should be and talked about his brother more. I said it was a great story (it was also written very well too) and defended it against the other critics he showed it around to, saying that your writing about your brother that way shows you know exactly what your personality and his personality and strengths are. And yet, you accepted him, maturely took his advice, and forgave him his older-brother syndrome of being an insufferable (and successful) know-it-all. You were the bigger brother and the bigger man, I said. The two, by the way, both got in, one to Columbia and the other to Cornell. My point is that there is no one-size-fits-all answer to how a college essay should be, and you should brainstorm, explore, and dig for the good story in you that everyone has. And, yes, everyone has a great story to tell. You need to tell yours.
