"I-85 교각 붕괴"라는 엄청난 피해를 끼치고 급기야는 주 비상사태까지 선포되었던
지난 3월30일 저녁 7시경에 발생한 I-85 ATLANTA MIDTOWN 지역 고속도로 인근 화재는 정신이 낫자루로 빠진 노숙자 3명이 사고현장에서 마약을 피우려다가 발생한 것인데,일당 3명 모두 31일 저녁에 체포되었다.일당 3명이 함께 코케인 흡입을 모의했지만,다른 2명이 거부하자,Eleby 혼자서 코케인 흡입중에 마침 바람이 불어와서 수년동안 사고현장에 야적되어 방치돼왔던 PVC 파이프에 불씨가 옮겨 붙은 바람에 대형화재로 번져 버렸고,급기야는 콘크리트 지반이 교각위로부터 폭삭 내려 앉으면서,급기야는 콘크리트 지반이 교각위로부터 폭삭 내려 앉으면서,I-85 고속도로 일부구간을 남북 양쪽으로 쌍방향에 걸쳐서 향후 수개월간 완전 폐쇄하고서 복구공사에 들어 가기로 조지아 주정부가 전격 결정을 내렸다.한편 이 구간을 통과하는 차량 숫자가 하루 25만대가 넘는 현실을 고려해 볼 때 21년전인 1996년에 애틀란타에서 올림픽 개최당시에 일어났던 최악의 교통 대란보다도 더 심각한 교통참사로 인해 모든 애틀란타 메트로 거주 전주민들이 앞으로 수개월동안 발을 동동 굴리고서 엄청나게 불편한 생활을 감내해내야 하며,조지아주 경제 전체에 끼치는 손실액이 수억dollar에 달할 것으로 예상되고 있다.
이 번 교각붕괴 사태로 인해 I-85 고속도로중 일부구간의 양방향 차선 운행이 전면 중단됨으로 말미암아,미증유의 극심한 최악의 도로 정체 상황이 빚어지고 있다. 복구될 때까지는 향후 수개월 정도가 소요될 것으로 예측되므로,당분간은 I-285 고속도로나,
400번 도로,주변 우회도로를 이용해야 하며,MARTA 전철 탑승도 강추되고 있다.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has outlined alternative routes for drivers after part of I-85 collapsed after a fire. I-85 is closed in both directions from the I-75/Brookwood split to the North Druid Hills exit. The detour includes Piedmont Road from Cheshire Bridge Road to Sydney Marcus Blvd.

The Georgia Department of Transportation wants drivers to beware of the following closures due to the damage on I-85 after Thursday's fire and collapse.
· I-85 is closed from I-75/Brookwood split to the North Druid Hills Exit
· Motorists traveling northbound on I-85 from the southside of Atlanta will be diverted to northbound I-75 at Brookwood near 17th Street
· Motorists traveling southbound on I-85 north of Atlanta will be diverted to northbound on SR400
· Motorists traveling southbound on SR400 from north of Atlanta will be diverted at Sidney Marcus exit
· I-285 and I-20 are both open to traffic and are the best alternatives for motorists to utilize if possible.
GDOT updated to show the detours on I-85 and closures.
- I-85 northbound traffic is being diverted to Buford Spring connector for local travel only;
- I-75/I-85 northbound traffic is being diverted to I-75NB. 17th Street is last available northbound exit prior to Brookwood split; (Read: Northbound? How to bypass the bridge collapse and return to I-85)
- I-75SB ramp to I-85NB ramp is closed;
- SR 400SB to I-85SB is closed. Traffic diverted to I-85NB. Sidney Marcus Blvd is last available exit;
- I-85 SB is closed. Traffic diverted to SR 400NB. Lenox/Cheshire Bridge is last available exit;
- Buford Spring connector southbound is open from Piedmont Road;
- Buford Spring connector northbound is now open from Spring/West Peachtree and Peachtree Street.
The Georgia Department of Transportation released an update map of I-85 alternative routes and detours on Saturday. Part of I-85 north has reopened up to the Buford-Spring Connector Saturday after a fire took down a portion of I-85 near Piedmont Road Thursday evening.
